  • KS2 Rise Gymnastics Competition

    Published 26/02/24, by Adam Gilbert

Last half term saw the return of the Rise Gymnastics Competitions for Merton Borough and we are incredibly proud of the children who were selected and represented Aragon.

The children selected needed to choregraph their own routine which included a creative start and end position alongside one skill from each of the eight skill areas. All of the children worked hard during their lunch time practising and rehearsing this ready for the event. They also then had to perform two vaults.

First up, was Year 5 and 6 on Wednesday 31st January. Cyrus, Harry, Hollie and Megan headed to Harris Academy in Wimbledon with Mrs Cox and Mrs Stonell to compete against other schools in the borough. On Friday 9th February, Daisy, Millie, Callum and Finley represented the Year 3 and 4 team to compete with Mrs Christelle and Mrs Moloney.

All of the staff were so impressed by the children’s hard efforts and attitudes they showed towards the event. The time and effort the children had put in to their routines really showed with the level of skill they performed. Cyrus and Harry wowed the coaches with their impressive move and were even asked to teach it to the other children alongside Daisy and Millie winning a bronze medal for their vault!

Overall, we were all extremely proud of all the children chosen and their fantastic efforts within the competition – well done everyone! This half term we are looking forward to another 3 big events which include inclusive football, tag rugby development and netball championships.

    Published 26/02/24, by Adam Gilbert

Last week, we were joined by Emily Fellah, children’s illustrator and artist. She spent time in each year 1 and 4 class sharing her journey to becoming a published illustrator. She gave tips on how to reach success and reiterated the message ‘never give up’ a moto she lives by.

She shared some of her books and took us on an adventure meeting the characters she had created from superhero insects to gingerbread monsters!

Then onto the main event. The ‘how to’ part of the session where Emily took us through the simple steps in creating our very own characters, from bears to robots and superheroes! She gave tips and hints throughout. The children all created their own pieces of work and were super proud of the final pieces.

‘I haven’t drawn a bear before; I didn’t know where to begin! I do now, I am going to show all my family tonight!’ Harliegh

‘I can draw a whole family, a bear family, It was easy!’ Maddie

‘I have made a superhero worm, like Superworm, but my one!’ Arthur

‘I’m excited for the artist, I hope she can teach me how to draw!’ Albie

‘The children were buzzing all day, excited to get stuck in and all proud of their creations and ready to show them off! Lovely to see everyone involved and enjoying themselves! A year group of budding artists’ Mrs Lester

  • Storytelling Week

    Published 20/02/24, by Adam Gilbert

Our entire school recently took part in Storytelling Week, from 27 January to 4 February! 📖 This incredible annual event is a vibrant celebration of the power that stories hold, reminding us of the joys of sharing them. âœĻ📚

Stories have the remarkable ability to teach us about the world around us, letting us step into someone else’s shoes, encouraging empathy, and broadening our horizons. They also provide a means to relax and escape from the everyday, whilst nurturing essential literacy skills.

To kickstart the week,  Mrs. Ryder and Mr. Gilbert, shared an enchanting tale during our assembly. They then set a thrilling challenge for the children: to learn and retell a traditional story over the course of the week! 📚📝

The culmination of this exciting week was a magnificent assembly, where each year group showcased their incredible storytelling skills. The performances were absolutely captivating!

Throughout the week, our eager students eagerly shared stories amongst themselves, and were treated to some mesmerizing tales from adults around the school. In addition to this, all parents, grandparents, aunites and uncles were invited in to school to read with their children and share stories.

🌟 We are immensely proud of all our students for their enthusiasm and creativity during Storytelling Week. Their dedication to honing their storytelling skills was truly inspiring! 🌟

Let's keep the magic of storytelling alive throughout the year, nurturing a love for tales that will last a lifetime! ðŸ’Ŧ📚

  • Y5 - Natural History and Science Museum

    Published 09/02/24, by Adam Gilbert

Year 5 had a wonderful time on Tuesday 6th February on their trip to not one, but TWO of London’s best museums, the Science Museum and the Natural History Museum.

Our first stop was the Natural History Museum museum. We first embarked on a journey to the centre of the Earth! We were able to use our knowledge from our geography lessons to correctly identify the different layers that make up our Earth’s structure before learning about what happens during an Earthquake! We even took a trip through the Earthquake simulator to experience the ground moving beneath our feet (don’t worry, we held on tight!).

After a quick pit stop for lunch, we were off again to the Science Museum. We explored the wonders of space ahead of our new science unit next half term and learnt more about America’s race to put a human on the Moon. We then explored the key events of creating modern machinery, visiting the James Watt section of the museum to get up close to one of the first steam trains ever built!

    Published 01/02/24, by Adam Gilbert

Last Friday, some of our gifted Year 6 mathematicians had an unforgettable adventure at Sandown Park Racecourse, all thanks to Racing to School! 🎉

ðŸ”Ē Throughout the day, our enthusiastic children dove into a world full of engaging maths activities that left them thrilled. Here are just a few highlights:

    • Parade Ring Area: They flexed their mathematical muscles by working out the area of the parade ring, putting their geometry skills to the test! 📏
    • Metric and Imperial Conversion: Converting between metric and imperial measurements became a fascinating challenge for the children. Who knew maths could be so practical? ðŸ’Ą
    • Reading Race Cards: By learning how to interpret race cards, our students discovered the intersection of numbers and probability. They were hooked from the start! 📊

😃 One of our students couldn't contain their excitement as they described the trip as the "best school trip of my whole time at Aragon!" Another proudly declared, "I've learnt so much, I can't wait to come back here!" It's moments like these that make every school trip worth it! 🚌

ðŸ”ī The highlight of the day was when the children got the chance to try on jockey silks for the first time and get up close to the magnificent racehorses! 🐎

We are immensely grateful to Racing to School for making this day possible and giving our children an incredible learning experience. 🙏

Say hello to the Year 6 Team: Miss Ballantine, Miss Franks, Miss Barnes, Mrs Jones, Mrs Cox, Mrs Ferretti and Mrs Knott.

We all love working in Year 6 because we love seeing how responsible and thoughtful our pupils become and we enjoy supporting and guiding them to become the fantastic role models to the rest of the school that they are. We are grateful to be able to support and prepare the children with their transition to high school and we love seeing how much the pupils mature and thrive in short space of time that they are with us.

Throughout the year, we are lucky enough to cover some fantastic topics in the curriculum, with a firm favourite so far being our Design & Technology unit of 'Waistcoats' where the children have designed and created their waistcoats.

This week, our fantastic Reading Champions have started their very important duties of reading with children in Reception in their own lunchtimes which they have voluntarily given up once, twice, or even three times a week. Being a Year 6 child at Aragon means hard-work, responsibility and maturity but far more importantly, heaps of fun!

  • KS2 Humanities Week

    Published 11/12/23, by Adam Gilbert

History came to life at Aragon last week! The theme was "hundred years of history", where each year group had the opportunity to learn about historical events they may not had heard of before! It was incredible to see the buzz around school for all things history as children were immersed in the culture, politics and entertainment of days gone by.

Year 3 looked at the 18th Century (1700-1799). We started off the week designing our own stained-glass windows representing a religious picture. We learned about James Cook and why he was a significant person in history. We role played as James Cook travelling around the Pacific Ocean, using the maps that we created to help us to navigate our way. We created our own James Cook timelines, showing the key events in his life. We created fact files about him and learned lots of amazing facts. Did you know that James Cook spent a lot of his time on science experiments and mapping new areas? Year 3 enjoyed learning all about him! We learned about the Kings and Queens of the 18th Century, Queen Anne, George I, George II and George III. Then chose one to draw using our observational skills to create a portrait. We looked at Morden in the 18th Century and compared it to now and enjoyed discussing how Morden has changed.

Year 4 have had a great week learning about their part of the Aragon timeline, 1600- 1699. We launched our week with an introductory lesson about witchcraft where we learnt about what they used to do to people to try and find out if they were a witch or not. We played a really cool game where the villagers had to try and work out who the witches were by accusations, this was to try and understand how anxious people were back in 1645. We then got creative and made montages about a given topic. Table 1 was given witchcraft, Table 2 was given Shakespeare, Table 3 was given Pocahontas, Table 4 was given 1600 Exploration (America) and Table 5 was given The Gunpowder Plot. We worked really hard, researching facts and cutting and sticking pictures and words onto our montages. After that, we became Geographers and studied London Bridge and what it was like in the 1600's vs what it's like now. We can't believe people lived ON London Bridge and there wasn't a road! We folded an A4 piece of paper in half and sketched the bridge then on one half and the bridge now on the other. Next, we learned about The Gunpowder Plot. We watched clips and had a class debate whether Bonfire Night should still be celebrated or not. We then made puppets and practiced sequencing the events ready to perform. We had so much fun!

Year 5 explored the 15th century and were transported back to the Tudor period. We had great fun learning all about the formation of the Tudor Rose and how the Tudor family came into power over England. We had great fun learning all about Henry VIII and his six wives. We also really enjoyed recreating some of the Tudor portraits, the Year 5 staff were blown away by the amount of detail that the children were able to add to their artwork. Later in the week, we found it fascinating to learn all about the Tudor influences in our local area and in particular the name of our school. The week was finished off with the children learning all about the other periods learnt across the school.

As the oldest pupils in the school, Year 6 were tasked with being sent all the way back to the beginning of the whole school timeline- the pre-1400s. They were fascinated to learn about the gory and gruesome punishments of the Romans and Anglo-Saxons that were given when crimes were committed and they re-created their own court case! They also learnt about the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and made their own Bayeux Tapestries.

On Friday 1st December, we opened the doors of the Aragon Museum where children presented their findings to each other dressed as a figure from history! A big thank you to all staff who helped made Humanities Week one for the history books!

  • Y5 Spotlight - Autumn Term

    Published 24/11/23, by Adam Gilbert

Year 5 have kicked off the year with a splash! 5L and 5K have been lucky enough to have their two weeks of swimming lessons. Mr Lillie and Mr Kennedy were so impressed with how the children were happy to dive right into this part of the curriculum! Miss Ellerby’s class can’t wait to jump in, in the Spring term.

Since September, we have explored a variety of different text types. This has included persuasive adverts; to visit our very own circus, and writing a sci-fi story continuation, which was based on the planet Pandora (Avatar films). One of our favourite topics (so far!) has been Oranges in No Man’s Land. It is a tale based during the civil war in Lebanon. We have been discussing what it must be like to go through war and the feelings refugees must feel. This has allowed us to explore empathy, something we have found particularly important considering the current climate.

We have been spending a ‘whole’ lot of time on fractions recently. We are piecing it together quite nicely! If the next topic is half as good as this, we’re in for a real treat. Pushing on with Science, we have been exploring ‘Forces’. We have pulled off multiple experiments and investigations into air resistance and water resistance, as well as testing friction. We are currently discovering how materials are used in everyday life and their different purposes and uses.

Throwing ourselves into the world of the Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings, we have thoroughly enjoyed exploring this fascinating period in time. The Past Presents came to deliver, what can only be described as, an event that will go down in History! The workshop enabled us to embody the historical figures and recreate events that we had learnt so much about. The year 5 staff are looking forward to the rest of the year, and the magical curriculum that awaits.
