School Council

We are fortunate to have a thriving School Council that enjoys being involved in every aspect of school life. Our mission is to spread wonder and awe throughout our school while promoting friendship and unity.

OUR ELECTION PROCESS

Believing in democracy, we hold School Council elections every September. During the election period, every child from Year 2 to Year 6 has the opportunity to apply for the position of School Council representative for their class. The application process involves three steps: writing an application speech, delivering the speech in front of their class, and being voted in by their classmates. Voting is conducted via a secret ballot. Once elected, the real fun begins!

Within the School Council, members from Upper Key Stage 2 (Years 5 and 6) take on specialised roles such as Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer. This year, we further expanded our roles with the introduction of Early Years Officer, Opal Officer, Eco Officer, and Health and Wellbeing Officer. These roles help embed pupil voice into every aspect of school life.

OUR RESPONSIBILITIES

We are responsible for giving all pupils a voice, achieved through our fortnightly meetings. Before each meeting, we are allocated time in our classes to gather any issues or suggestions from our peers, which we record in our School Council books. These are then discussed in our meetings. After the meeting, we report back to our classes on the outcomes. This system ensures everyone's voice is heard and works effectively.

Occasionally, we lead assemblies for both KS1 and KS2. These assemblies, usually led by our Chairperson, involve contributions from all School Council members. It’s a rewarding part of our role, keeping everyone informed about past and upcoming events.

Our Chairperson and Secretary liaise with the senior management team to schedule School Council events in the school diary. These meetings generally take place at the start of each half term.

This year, we’ve worked hard not only to raise funds for developing our Opal playground but also to enhance the learning environment for our peers.

FUNDRAISING EVENTS

  • "What I Want to Be When I Grow Up" Mufti Day – Pupils dressed as their future selves, while teachers dressed as their childhood aspirations. It was a delightfully fun day!
  • Teacher/Children Mufti Day – Teachers dressed as pupils, and pupils dressed as teachers, which had everyone laughing.
  • "Break the Rules" Day – Pupils could break up to four rules from a list, paying a 50p fine per rule. Organising this was incredibly fun.
  • Annual Autumn Competition – Last year, pupils created stunning autumn-themed wreaths to decorate the school. This year, they made beautiful stained glass windows with autumn themes.
  • Valentine Bake Sale – We sold delicious homemade cakes and received tremendous support.

Over the past two years, our fundraising efforts have raised an incredible £1,500 for our school.

NON-FUNDRAISING EVENTS

  • The Big Fat Quiz of Aragon – A fun quiz with 50 questions about our school’s history and quirky facts about our staff. It encouraged everyone to interact more and fostered a stronger sense of community.
  • Annual Kindness Challenge – Held at Christmas, this challenge spreads kindness within the wider community while earning points for classes.
  • Food Bank Donation Day – Collaborating with Wimbledon Food Bank, we collected a staggering half-tonne of donations. The generosity of our school community was inspiring.
  • Teacher of the Month – Pupils nominate and vote for a teacher to receive a certificate and badge each month, showing appreciation for their hard work.
  • Termly Certificate of Thanks – Jointly awarded with the governing body, this recognises non-teaching staff who contribute to making our school exceptional. Recipients have included our Site Manager and Chair of Governors, with more to come.
  • School Council Dance-Off – A lunchtime event where year groups competed in a dance-off, with winners enjoying a movie afternoon.
  • Swap Shop – Currently in development, this initiative will allow pupils to exchange house points for prizes during termly shop events.
  • Visit to the Houses of Parliament – A memorable day exploring this historic and awe-inspiring building, filled with fascinating history.

UPCOMING EVENTS

We’re currently working on our new Kindness Challenge for 2024, with fresh ideas for spreading kindness within our school and the wider community. Additionally, we are creating a collaborative art piece featuring family photos from our school, celebrating the people who make it so special.

We’re also planning two teacher-vs-pupil competitions and continuing to develop our playground friendship benches. These initiatives, inspired by the brilliant ideas of our peers, make us excited for what’s to come. 2025 promises to be even busier than 2024. Here’s to making our school the best it can be!
